I had the honor of designing an emblem for Long Farms, land donated to Peru State College by Dr. Daryl Long, a beloved professor whose legacy spans over 40 years. This project was more than just a design—it was a tribute to Dr. Long and his late wife, Peggy, both of whom left lasting impacts on the campus and community.
To create a meaningful crest, I conducted personal research into Dr. Long’s life. I discovered his passion for aviation and farming, and Peggy’s love for sewing. These details became the heart of the design:

A hand-illustrated depiction of Dr. Long’s plane, complete with its FAA tail number
Rows of farmland to reflect both Long Farms and his dedication to agriculture
A rising sun to symbolize new beginnings for the college
Delicate stitching around the border as a subtle but heartfelt nod to Peggy’s craft

The final emblem was unveiled during a dedication event, where it was presented to Dr. Long for the first time. After the ceremony, I had the privilege of walking him through the symbolism embedded in the design. He was deeply moved, particularly by the inclusion of his plane and the tribute to his wife. A few days later, he sent me a personal thank-you card—a gesture I now treasure deeply, as he passed shortly after the event.
This project reminds me why I design: to create work that carries meaning, tells a story, and touches lives.
